Given that information about the writing process is decentralized in various places (books, journal articles, institutional or personal websites, info from the lab group, etc) it would be helpful to have a central resource for easy access.

When you learn something new that you want to remember, store it here.

Common stylistic/grammatical issues to remember

  • Affect versus effect
    • "affect" is to influence, used as verb, such as "The manipulation affects the dependent variable.
    • "effect" is the result, used as noun, such as "The manipulation had no effect upon the dependent variable"
  • i.e. versus e.g.
    • "i.e." means "that is", so you are then listing everything or making your point more clear
    • "e.g." means "for example", so you are not listing everything

Structure, and what belongs in each section

  • Title page
  • Abstract
  • Introduction
  • Method
  • Results
    • If the result section is long, then break it up into sections based upon similar statistical techniques, and then remember to put a summary paragraph at the beginning of the Results section that provides a roadmap of the analysis
    • For each analysis, remember to first re-state the hypothesis that is being tests - and/or after each analysis provide a short interpretation that re-states the hypothesis
  • Discussion
    • The first paragraph of the Discussion section should be a concise summary of the results and/or first summarize the hypothesis before summarizing the results.
